Mole.my – A grant allocated under the PKR-led Selangor state is said to be used to fund a political movement in local universities.
The Selangorku grant is led by a taskforce chaired by Selangor Housing and Property Board chief executive officer.
The taskforce includes the Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) chief administrator, Public Works Department (JKR) engineers and State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) officers.
Independent accountants and engineers appointed by Khalid also make up the taskforce.
The matter was highlighted by blogger Gelagat Anwar who claimed that a part of the Selangorku grant will be used to fund political movement.
The blogger wrote this will also be a way for the Opposition to gauge their influence among students.
“Currently, pro-Anwar groups have been created in campuses, and Selangorku grant will be used to fund their campaigns in order to ensure the impact of the initiative.
“It is also learnt that Pas will be given a mandate to lead the movement while PKR will provide financial support via the Selangorku grant,” the blogger said.
The blogger said that among issues that will be highlighted by the movement are those associated with freedom to participate in political organisations (referring to the case of Professor Aziz Bari), free education, economy and job opportunities.
Student representative from University Sains Malaysia Muhammad Idzuan Jamaluddin, when contacted, said this political move may have been derived from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s personal experience from his university years when he was an active political activist.
“The concept of democracy in this scenario has been totally distorted, because it seems like the students are treated more like agents by the opposition party.
“If claims that it is Anwar’s initiative in using the Selangorku grant to fund this political movement in campuses, it clearly shows that he is desperate to gain influence and is using students as puppets to achieve his political goals.
“Students should be free from being manipulated by any party in campuses,” Muhammad Idzuan said adding that he opposes initiatives to infuse politics into campuses as it will tarnish the role of universities as a learning centre.
Student Representative Council of the Institute of Higher Learning president, Wan Ahmad Hazman Wan Daud also disagrees and thinks it is unethical.
“The end does not justify the means, if they genuinely want to help they should use their own money and should not use the Selangorku grant to fund their campaign,” he said.
Wan Ahmad Hazman also highlighted that PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution had stated before that students should be free from any political influence and should be able to assess and choose on their own.
PKR’s vice-president Tian Chua, when contacted denied that there is such a program by the opposition.
“What’s the basis of the allegation? Selangorku fund, which item? Why students? Election is a few months away, what’s the logic to go for students?” he said in a text message response
