300 Premises : Penang is now a mini Las Vegas
Pertubuhan Islam Gabungan Amal (Pertiga) president Sabaruddin Ahmad said that each of these premises have at least 50 gaming machines each.
He added that Pertiga wanted to stage a demonstration through a convoy of 1,000 motorcyclists at some of the premises on the island, but most of them were closed when their members rode by earlier.
“It seemed like the operators knew we were coming and had closed their outlets,” he said.
Sabaruddin said Pertiga wrote a letter to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng two weeks ago to seek a meeting but the latter had apparently refused to meet them.
“We wanted to bring up issues concerning social ills to him in the meeting but our request was rejected. Must Pertiga always stage a protest when we need to voice our concerns?” Sabaruddin asked.
“Gambling is unhealthy and Lim should have done something to tackle the problem instead of passing the buck to the Federal Government,” he told a press conference at Persiaran Bayan Indah here.
Sabaruddin said Pertiga was set up to voice out concerns of everyone here, and not just the Muslims.
Pertiga also urged the state government to construct a motorcycle racing track in the state to prevent the young from resorting to illegal street racing.
State Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the local authorities issues licences to cybercafes here but some operators alleged- ly abused their permits to conduct illicit activities.
“It would be under the jurisdiction of the police to charge those operators who have misused their licence,” he said when con-tacted.
